Burning sage is one of the oldest and purest methods of cleansing a person, group of people or space. The Latin word for sage, ‘Salvia,’ stems from the word ‘to heal.’ The ancient Celtic druids used sage as a sacred herb with oak moss for burning as well as medicinal purposes. Alongside sage, Juniper was one of their sacred trees, the berries were used for purification and they wore violets in amulets for good luck and fortune.
